When looking at a castle have you ever asked yourself why our ancestors built such a structure, one which still impresses us today? What might this castle once have looked like? How was it constructed? Which tools did people use in those distant times?
We want to find out! With this ambitious project we want to go back in time exploring the formation of a medieval castle and the ways people lived in.
As its name already suggests, we are going to reconstruct an early fortress called Motte, and a fortified enclosure called Bailey by using historical construction techniques. By creating the fortress as well as a residential area we will be able to revive ways and means of living in such a structure very close to the original way of living in the Middle Ages. And what‘s more, we ask: Can we possibly find solutions for nowadays problems by reconstructing a medieval structure?
We are building a castle! Join in!
Everyone can join in and get involved with our medieval Motte-and-Bailey-Castle be it in planning and organizing, in building construction or in creating medieval gardens and designing medieval fashion!
Update November 2024 A lot has happened in our project during the last two years. Our research concerning “construction/construction technology/architectural style in the Wetterau in medieval times” has generated great results. By now we have set up our own small “library” containing round about 90 specialized books and scientific papers. On this website our teams ”construction”, “medieval garb” and “plants” will be provided with an online- platform to present their results.
So stay tuned and check back with us from time to time!
